The fearful incident that Helen experienced taught her a valuable lesson. She learnt that nature is not always kind. One day she and her teacher were returning from a ramble. On the way back home was a wild cherry tree just a short distance from their house. The shade of the tree was very cool; Helen was tempted to climb it with the assistance of her teacher. She sat in the branches. Miss Sullivan proposed to have their luncheon up in the tree and went to the house to fetch it. Suddenly a change passed over the tree in her absence. The sky was overcast threateningly. Helen knew a thunderstorm was about to come. A nameless fear clutched her heart. She felt absolutely alone and scared. Helen began missing her teacher. Soon the tree began to sway shake. Twigs began to snap and fall; Helen wanted to jump down the tree in fear; as she was expecting the worst to happen, her teacher seized her hand and helped her down. Helen clung to her teacher, trembling with joy to feel the earth under her feet. Miss Sullivan held Helen reassuringly in her arms and pacified all her fears.

Helen has clear memories of the months that followed. She used her hands to gain knowledge of the world around her. Her vocabulary increased and with it her understanding of things around her. She felt more part of the world. Most of her lessons that summers came from nature. Miss Sullivan helped her to find beauty in nature and also helped her bound with her younger sister.

One particular incident taught Helen to fear the power of me . One day that summer, she climbed up a cherry tree with the help of teacher. While she waited there for miss Sullivan to return with their lunch, a storm blew up. She sensed a changed in the weather by the sudden fall of temperature and the smell which came up from the earth. She was too frightened to climb down on her own. The strong gusts of wind shook the branches and the tree and Helen was terrified. She clung on with all her strength until her teacher returned and helped her down. This experience made Helen aware that nature could be as treacherous as it was giving.

It was a long time before Helen climbed a tree again. The delicate scent of the mimosa blossom drew her out of summer house where she was reading and led her to the tree growing at the end of the garden. To Helen it seemed like the tree of paradise and, after a moment of hesitation, she climbed up the tree on her own. She found a comfortable seat in the tree and sat there for a long loving hours. The mimosa became the favourite spot for Helen to sit upon and dream.
