Man faces a world of complex social problems. As a result he is perplexed beyond description. His thinking often ends in confusion. In thinking about social problems the so-called practical person has proceeded in his own way. In the strict sense, social thought is the product of the thinking together of associates. Most social thought is of the ordinary dinner table variety, that is casual and desultory.

Most social thought in the sense of group thought about social questions has contributed little to knowledge. Discussion-group thinking illustrates social thinking on its higher levels, but discussion-group thinking is not yet extensive. However, a great deal may be expected from it in the future. In fact in countries that preserve freedom of speech, it promises to become ultimately the main type of thought.

The thinking of persons about social life falls into three categories:

1. That involving the advancement of human groups as groups.

2. That referring to the manipulation of human beings to the gain of a special clique or group.

3. That which aims to analyze the underlying social processes and laws irrespective of the effects of such analyses or the uses to which they are put.

The history of Social thought rises out of the beginnings of human struggle on earth and with jagged edges extends along the full sweep of the changing historical horizon. It finds expression through some of the world’s best minds. Our quest will bring us in contact with the most vital moments of the world’s most valuable thinkers

Social thought usually finds its initial expression during social crises. When “prosperity” reigns and people are – in general, satisfied, new social thought is at ebb tide. But when social conditions are marked by gross injustices or when social changes come rapidly due to inventions, wars or other basic disturbances, then thinking about social life and problems is highly stimulated and new ideas or systems of ideas, that is ideologies are originated.

Social thought is that branch of thought which is primarily concerned with man’s general social life and its problems as created, expressed and endured by human interrelations and interactions. E.S. Bogardus has defined social thought by saying that, “Social thought is thinking about social problems by one or few persons here and there in human history or at present.”

Social thought does not originate all on a sudden rather it develops gradually, and slowly only with the passage of time. Rollin Chambliss has defined social thought by saying that “Social thought is concerned with human beings in their relations with their fellows.”

Characteristics of Social thought:

Social thoughts are mainly derived from the social problems.

According to Bogardus, social thoughts have the following characteristics:

1. Social thoughts are originated from social problems.

2. Social thoughts are also related to the human social life.

3. It is the result of social interactions and interrelations.

4. Social thoughts are influenced by the time and also place.
