India is one of the biggest peninsulas in the World and has approx. 7517 kms coastline. The major ports are controlled by the central Government through Major Port Trust Act, 1963 whereas medium and minor ports (part of concurrent lists) are managed and administered by respective states. There are seven major port located on the east coast of India i.e. Tuticorin (Tamil Nadu), Chennai (Tamil Nadu), Ennore (Tamil Nadu), Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), Paradip (Odisha), Haldia & Kolkata (West Bengal), and Port Blair (Andaman & Nicobar Island).

The water transport provides the cheapest source of transportation to any country. Presently in India there are approx. 14,500 kms long navigable waterways. It has 13 major and 200 minor ports along with the 7517 kms long coastline. The port of India is controlled by the Central Government under the ambit of Port Trust Act, 1963. There are six major ports located at west coast of India i.e. Kandla Port (Gujarat), Mumbai (Maharashtra), Navasheva (Jawaharlal Nehru Port), Murmagoa, New Mangalore (Karnataka), and Kochi (Kerala).
