When Winston Churchill lost the elections and the Labour Party under Clement Atlee came to power, Atlee declared that the British would quit India by June 1948 and in March 1946, Prime minister Atlee of England sent a Cabinet Mission to India to hold talks with the Indian leaders and this mission consists of three cabinet ministers, Lord Pethick Lawrence, Sir Stafford Cripps and A V Alexander.

Its main features were:

The plan proposed greater autonomy to the provinces and the princely states and only defence and foreign affairs were kept under the central control.

the provinces were granted the right to form a union among themselves.

the plan also proposed formation of the interim government at the centre to carry on the administration until the constitution was implemented.

an assembly consisting of 389 members was to be formed of the Constitution of India.

But however, the mission failed because the Congress accepted the plan of an interim government at the centre which had serious differences with the Muslim league on many issues and as a result communal riots took place in many parts of the country and caused widespread destruction.
