Answer:

Three cropping seasons in India - Rabi, Kharif and Zaid.

Explanation :

Rabi season : Rabi crops are sown in winter from October to December and harvested in summer from April to June. Some of the important rabi crops are wheat, barley, peas, gram and mustard. These crops are grown in large parts of India, states from the north and north - western parts such as Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh are important for the production of wheat and other rabi crops. Availability of precipitation during winter months due to the western temperate cyclones helps in the success of these crops.

Kharif season :Kharif crops are grown with the onset of monsoon in different parts of the country and these are harvested in September - October. Important crops grown during this season are paddy, maize, jowar, bajra, tur(arhar), moong, urad, cotton, jute, groundnut and soyabean.

Zaid season : In between the rabi and the kharif seasons, there is a short season during the summer months known as the Zaid season. Some of the crops produced during 'zaid' are watermelon, muskmelon, cumumber, vegetables and fodder crops.

The three major cropping seasons in India are Kharif, Rabi, and Zaid.

The cropping seasons are explained as follows :

1. Kharif season -

  • The Kharif season of cropping is used to harvest and cultivate monsoon crops.
  • It mainly starts around the month of June and ends in the month of October in India.
  • The crops grown in the Kharif season require a lot of water hence, are harvested in the monsoon
  • If there's any change or delay in the rain it may highly affect the Kharif crops.
  • Some examples of the Kharif crops are jowar, rice, soybeans, and cotton. All these crops require a high amount of water for better growth and hence are grown in the Kharif season.

2. Rabi season -

  • The Rabi season of cropping is mainly used for winter crops.
  • The sowing of Rabi crops starts around October or November and the harvest is completed by the month of February-April
  • Rabi crops require cold weather to grow along with some amount of water.
  • Hence, the Rabi season comes at the very end of the monsoon and goes on for the entire winter.
  • The common examples of Rabi crops are wheat, oats, barley, and bajra.

3. Zaid season -

  • The crops grown in the Zaid season are mainly summer crops that require heat to grow.
  • The Zaid season starts in the month of March and ends around late June in India.
  • The crops grown in the Zaid season require dry and warm weather and a long length of the day which happens during summers in India.
  • These crops grow between the Kharif and Rabi seasons and mature early.
  • Cucumber, muskmelon, watermelon, and seasonal vegetables are some of the major examples of Zaid crops.
