The division of power between the central and state government is called federal division of power . It is called so because this involve the sharing of power between the higher and lower level of government .

Federal Division of Powers is such a power sharing arrangement in which constitution of the country clearly lays down the division of powers at different levels of government.

In this arrangement, division of powers involves the higher and lower levels of government like union/ Nation, states/provinces and local.

Principles of federal division

(i) Under the federal division of power the power is divided among different levels of government ; for example in India the power is shared among the three levels of governments, i.e., Union government, the state governments and the local governments.

(ii) This type of system is known as vertical division of power.

(iii) Under this the Constitution clearly lays down the power of each level of government.
