It was a pyramid system, based on the level of power.

The king was at the top, who gave grants of land to his noblemen called baron.

The noblemen provided troops to the king.

Then bishop, who was almost equal to the barons.

Then the lords or knights, who got grants of land from bishops.

And the lowest in hierarchy were peasants who worked upon the lands.

This system was based on hierarchy of king at the top, followed by

baron, bishop, knights and peasants
