The first lesson taught to Helen by Miss Sullivan was on the morning after Miss Sullivan arrived at Helen’s house. She gave her a doll, which the little blind children at the Perkins Institution had sent it for her as a gift. When Helen had played with it for a while, Miss Sullivan spelled the word "d-o-l-l" on her palm. Helen liked this finger play on her palm and tried to imitate it. When Helen succeeded in spelling the word after many attempts, she was filled with childish pleasure and pride.
