ILLIAC IV system was the first attempt to contruct a large-scale parallel machine and in its time it was the most powerful computing machine in the world.  

Designed and constructed by academics and scientists from the Illinois University and Burroughs Corporation.  

A important amount of software including sophisticated compilers was developed for ILLIAC IV and many researchers were able to develop parallel application software.
