Explain the following giving examples.
(a) saturated solution
(b)pure substance
(c) colloid
(d) suspension
Answers
Answer:
SATURATED SOLUTION
A solution, which dissolves as much solute as it is capable of dissolving at a given temperature, is called a saturated solution.
PURE SUBSTANCE
A pure substance is a homogeneous material which contains particles of one kind only and has definite physical properties. Every pure element or compound is a substance. For example, nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide, sugar, iron, silver, etc.
COLLOIDAL SOLUTION (COLLOID)
A heterogeneous solution in which the particle size is between 10-7 cm to 10-5 cm, such that the solute particles neither dissolve nor settle down is called colloidal solution or colloidal suspension.
SUSPENSIONS
A heterogeneous mixture of insoluble particles of solute in a liquid is called a suspension. The size (diameter) of solute particles is more than 10-5cm. The particles have a tendency to settle down at the bottom of the vessel (sedimentation). The particles can be filtered out because of their large size than the pores of the filter paper.
