In a chemical reaction when electron is lost it is said as oxidation and when an electron is gained it is said as reduction.

Example when wood is burnt the electrons of the carbon atom of the wood is transferred to the oxygen in the air. Here reduction takes place in the oxygen it gains electron and carbon loosing electron is oxidation .
