Emotions are build both from the consequences of being kind or cruel. Kindness is opposite of cruelty, but both go hand in hand because if someone doe not know about cruelty, he cant understand what is kindness. Similarly, if a person is gaining something, then it might be his gain, but it will be a loss for someone also. However if a person is on a solitary passage, then he might not be concerned about loss or gain, he will continue to survive alone
