When calcium oxide is mixed with water then a suspension solution of calcium hydroxide is formed. this solution is used in whitewashing as the calcium hydroxide reacts with carbon dioxide to give calcium carbonate giving the walls a shiny finish.
CaO + H2O -----> Ca(OH)2
