The brown substance that is copper when heated, copper oxide is formed.
It is known as a combination reaction. If hydrogen gas is made to pass over pre-heated copper oxide ( CuO ).
As a result, the black coating on the surface turns brown as the reverse reaction takes place and copper is obtained.
So when hydrogen gas is passed over copper oxide copper is obtained.

The Chemical form of Black Copper oxide is CuO.
The chemical form of Hydrogen is H2.
When reacted together, this forms free copper metal and water.
Metallic copper and water vapour will be formed when hydrogen is passed over heated copper (II) oxide. CuO + H2 = Cu + H2O. is the chemical equation for when hydrogen is passed over black copper oxide.
