Explain the following reaction giving its balanced chemical equation: Hydrogen gas is passed over black copper oxide.

CuO + H2 = H2O + Cu.

When hydrogen gas is passed through black copper oxide , the copper oxide reduces to copper while hydrogen oxidized to water (H2O).

The balanced chemical equation is:
heat
CuO+H2---------> Cu +H2O
