When steam is passed over Aluminium, aluminium oxide is formed along with a gas which burns with a pop sound when a burning splinter is brought near it. This gas is hydrogen. ... But on increasing the temperature further, the protective coating breaks, evolving hydrogen again. 2Al + 3H20 (steam) --> Al2O3 + 3H2.
