Saponification and esterification
Explanation:
(a) Saponification
Saponification is the process by which soaps are made from triglycerides and sodium or potassium hydroxide. To prepare soap, we need an acid and a base.
(C18H35O2)3C3H5 + 3 NaOH → C3H5(OH)3 + 3 C18H35O2Na
C18H35O2Na - Sodium stearate is soap.
(b) Esterification
When an alcohol reacts with carboxylic acid in presence of an acid catalyst and heat, we get an ester and water. This reaction is called esterification.
CH3COOH + CH3CH2OH --> CH3COOCH2CH3 + H2O
CH3COOCH2CH3 is Ethyl acetate, an ester.
