Explain the following : Slaked lime is added to factory waste

The factory effluents are acidic in nature. If it is discharged directly into rivers it can lower the pH of the river and cause harm to aquatic life. Hence slaked lime is added to neutralize the acid and it won't be that much harmful to the rivers.
