Sepoys was a general term used for Indian soldiers. These sepoys had their own grievances against . British East India Company.

The one thing which led rebellion among sepoy was the new gunpowder cartridges for the rifles in early 1857. It was being said that, those cartridges were made of cow and pig fat.

To load the rifle, the sepoys needed to tear open the cartridge with their teeth. This was disrespectful for both Hindus and Muslims as Hindus considered cow as holy animal and Muslims considered pig unclean.

This caused the discontent among Hindu and Muslim sepoys.
