Answer:

Mg has atomic no. 12, its e. configuration is (2,8,2) that means its has 2 e- in outermost orbit. hence its valency is 2. chlorine has atomic no. 17, it has e. configuration (2,8,7) . it has valency 1. Cl is non metal & Mg a metal. Hence, Mg donates & Cl accepts Electrons. but Mg has valency 2 & Cl has 1. hence the formula of their compound- magnesium chloride ( MgCl2) . in this Mg gives 2 e- And 2 Cl atoms accept it. ( coz Cl has valency 1) so, 1 Mg atom & 2 Cl atoms form the compound. in this Mg becomes a positively charged ion. and Cl negatively Charged. due to attraction of opposite charges , the compound is formed. hope u understood.
