It also prevents the loss of water by evaporation.The outer protective layer or bark of a tree is known as the cork. It is made up of dead secondary meristematic cells. As the meristem die they form multiple layers around the previously formed bark. This leads the bark becomes thicker.

Bark is formed as a result of the secondary growth in the plants. Phallogen cut the cell inside as phelloderm or secondary cortex and outer side as phellem of cork. The bark is a water proof protective layer (bark) present on the trees to prevent loss of water through evaporation
