Ions are electrically charged particlesformed when atoms lose or gain electrons.Ions are formed when atoms lose or gain electrons in order to fulfill the octet rule and have full outer valence electron shells. When they lose electrons, they become positively charged and are named cations. When they gain electrons, they are negatively charged and are named anions.

<b><i><u>Ion:

Ion means an atom or a molecule with some electric charge due to the loss and gain of one or more electrons.

Formation of an ion:

Ions are formed when atoms loose or gain electrons in order to fulfill the octet rule and have full outer valance electron shell.

Why it is formed:

Metal atoms form positive ions, while non-metal atoms form negative ions. The strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions are called ionic bonds.
