Mg forms ionic bond to cl by donating it's valence electrons to two Cl atoms .The electrons configuration of Mg is [Be]3S² it's can achieve a complete octet by losing its two valence electrons of form Mg²+ .. the oppositely charges of the Magnesium and cloride ions attract to each other to form ionic bond of My and Cl.
