Answers
we have to explain the formation of ionic compound Al₂O₃ with electron dot structure.
solution : atomic no of Al = 13
so electronic configuration of Al = 2, 8, 3
atomic no of O = 8
so electronic configuration of O = 2, 6
from octet rule,
Al is an electron donor element and O is electron accepter element. because after losing 3 electron Al completes its octet and after gaining 2 electron O complete its octet.
we know, ionic bond is formed by sharing of electrons. here 2 aluminium atoms donates 2 × 3 = 6 electrons to 3 oxygen atoms.
see figure, after sharing electrons, both elements fulfill their octet and form Al₂O₃ ionic compound.
