Explain the formation of MgO molecule by ionic bonding

Mg has 9 electron in its last shell, so it needs to lose one electron to have 8 electron in  its outer shell, so that it becomes octet. Oxygen needs 1 electron to complete its octet. So Mg will lose one electron and O will gain one electron forming MgO.
