Answer:

* The Northern plains extends, South of the Himalalyas , from Punjab to the Brahmaputra valley in Assam .

* It comprises three drainage basins , the Indus and the Ganga plains and the Brahmaputra valley .

FORMATION OF NORTHERN PLAINS

*The Himalayan uplift out of the Tethys sea and subsidence of the northern flank of the penninsular plateau resulted in the formation of a large basin .

* In due course of time this depression gradually got filled with the depositions of sediments by the rivers flowing from the mountains in the north and the penninsular plateau in the south .

* A flat land of extensive alluvial deposits led to the formation of the northern plains of India .

DUE TO PRESENCE OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF ALLUVIAL SOIL NORTHERN PLAINS ARE DIVIDED IN 4 BELTS .

* The Bhabar .

The Bhabar .* The Terai .

The Bhabar .* The Terai .*The Bhangar.

The Bhabar .* The Terai .*The Bhangar.*The Khadar.

BHABAR

*located low to shivaliks .

*small stones form this belt .

TERAI

* located below Bhabar .

*marshy area .

*dense forests are found .

*Fertile region .

BHANGAR

* located above the foothills .

* largest area of northern plains .

* old alluvial soil .

* small kankars are found .

KHADAR

*These are younger deposits of flood plains .
