Ozone , O3 , contain 3 atoms of oxygen, it is deadly poisnous for animals, but in the upper layer of atmosphere, it act as a shield by protecting us from UV (ultravoilet) rays which comes from sun. these rays can cause disease like skin-cancer.

FORMATION OF OZONE:when oxygen reaches the uppermost layer of atmosphere , it reacts with UV rays which split it into free-oxygen atom, then these single oxygen atom combine with O2 to form ozoneO2 ----uv--- O + O O + O2 ------- O3

ozone is a essential gas.it protects us from uv rays which causes skin cancer. when ozone reacts with direct sunlight, it forms nascent oxygen and combine with oxygen present in atmosphere to form ozone.
