A fossil fuel, petroleum is formed when large quantities of dead organisms, mostly zooplankton and algae, are buried underneath sedimentary rock and subjected to both intense heat and pressure. Petroleum has mostly been recovered by oil drilling (natural petroleum springs are rare).

When the marine plants or animals died,their bodies sank to the sea bed and covered by fine sand,clay and other materials carried by running water and deposited as sediment.Bacteria attacked the dead remains and turned them into petroleum under high pressure and enormous heat.Petroleum then seeped through the porous rocks,such as sand stone,and reached the impermeable rock and were trapped below.
