Na have one electron in outermost shell and Cl have seven electrons in outermost shell . Na needs to lose one electron to complete octet and Cl needs one electron to complete its octet. So Na gives one electron to Cl .And ionic bond is formed bw Na and Cl and ionic compound NaCl is formed.
