The Philippines and Indonesia are cluttered with thousands and thousands of islands across thousands of square kilometers.
Usually such islands are the results of huge volcanic activity which took place millions of years ago, resulting in huge releases of magma and development of large trenches underneath the sea.
As this volcanic activity took place under the sea, the magma cooled quicklly, piling up over one another for millions of years, eventually surfacing and resulting in the development of islets and islands in huge numbers.
Even today, the area is home to many volcanoes.

Indonesia and Philippines are home to some of the largest number of archipelagos in the world. There is a lot of deposition, land elevation, erosion and subduction in these areas that result in a lot of volcanic activities and tectonic plate movement.
While the volcanic activities result in the formation of various independent islands, the tectonic plates shifting action cause them to group together as a cluster or group in a small area.
