Note

H–O–H bond angle = 104.5° (less than 109° due to lone-pair:bonding-pair repulsion being greater than bonding-pair:bonding-pair repulsion)

Answer:

  • VSEPR theory is based on the fact/ assumption that there is a repulsion between the pairs of valence electrons in all atoms, and the atoms will always tend to arrange themselves in a manner in which this electron pair repulsion is minimalized.
  • This arrangement of the atom determines the geometry of the resulting molecule.
  • Atomic number of oxygen is 8. It has 6 valence electrons and requires 2 more for an octet configuration.
  • Oxygen is the central atom in water molecule.
  • Atomic number of hydrogen is 1 so it requires  1 electron to obtain valence configuration
  • Therefore, two hydrogen atoms form 1 sigma bond (each) with the central oxygen atom.
