Fossil fuel combustion releases sulfur oxides, SOX, because there is sulfur in the fuel. Many forms of coal contain between 1% and 2% sulfur. That sulfur becomes SOX during combustion at a rate of about 13 pounds per megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity generated from a typical coal-fired power plant in the United States. Relatively clean by comparison, natural gas produces about 0.1 pounds of SOX per MWh. Unfortunately, SOX causes many atmospheric and environmental problems. When mixed with water vapor in the atmosphere, SOX forms sulfuric acid (H2SO4), the primary component of acid rain, which negatively impacts ecosystems wherever the acids are deposited. When SOX mixes with ammonia vapor (from agricultural operations, for example) it forms ammonium sulfate ((NH4)2SO4), which is a form of particulate matter.

Petroleum-based fuels, especially diesel, also contain sulfur. Quantities are usually less than 1%, but when emissions per gallon are scaled to the number of miles driven by all diesel trucks around the world, the cumulative amount becomes nontrivial. Because of the impacts from SOX, in the first decade of the 2000s, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) created new standards for ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) requiring sulfur content less than 15 parts per million. This requirement forces refineries to scrub sulfur from the middle distillates before selling them to retailers. While sulfur causes pollution, it also serves as a lubricating agent within internal combustion engines. Fuels with lower sulfur levels will cause an engine to perform differently, raising concerns about engine wear, failing seals, and swelling gaskets. Thus, engines must be adjusted to accommodate ULSD fuel, which is one of the costs of reducing sulfur emissions from the tailpipe.

Burning of Fossil fuel

Fossil fuels are non-renewable sources of energy. Now there are only limited reserves left in the world. These stores will end soon. These fuels cause a lot of pollution. Burning fossil fuels produces oxides of carbon, sulfur, nitrogen. Sulfur oxides are acidic and cause acid rain. This acid rain affects our water and soil resources.

The burning of fossil fuels causes many types of harmful particles and smoke pollution in the air, due to which many types of respiratory diseases are spread. Carbon dioxide increases the temperature of the atmosphere due to the greenhouse effect and carbon monoxide destroys the life of people sleeping in closed rooms by making kaboxy hemoglobin.
