Collins English Dictionary.Free electrons are the ones which are 'free'-in a literal sense-free to move within the volume of metals, generally comprising of the outermost shell of an atom. These electrons aren't (as it seems apparantly) under the control of the positive nuclei, owing to their existence in outermost shell, or orbit.
