Phospholipids form the basic structure of a cell membrane, called the lipid bilayer. Scattered in the lipid bilayer are cholesterol molecules, which help to keep the membrane fluid consistent. Membrane proteins are important for transporting substances across the cell membrane.

Structure and function of cell membrane are:
- The cell membrane is also known as the plasma membrane, is the outermost protective layer of animal cells.
- It is mainly made up of lipids and proteins, and has a thickness of 7.5nm to 10nm.
- It is a metabolically active selectively semi-permeable membrane.
- It helps in protecting the shape as well as the interior content of a cell.
- The cell membrane also helps in regulating growth in a cell through the balance of endocytosis and exocytosis.
- Since the cell membrane is selectively it controls the substances that enters the cell.
