Answer:

The main function of auxin is to help plants grow. Auxin stimulates plant cells to elongate, and the apical meristem of a plant is one of the main places that auxin is produced. ... Auxin also elongates root cells down into the ground, while at the same time elongating cells in the stem upward.

Answer:

AUXINS :

Discovery of Auxins :

  • It started when Charles Darwin and his son Francis Darwin observed that coleoptiles of canary grass responded to light by bending towards it.
  • After this observation, it was concluded that the coleoptiles had some chemicals that helped it respond to light.
  • F.W. Went discovered Auxin and isolated it from the coleoptiles of the oat seedlings.
  • Auxins were also isolated from the human urine but it's role wasn't known.

More information about Auxins :

  • Auxins are indole compounds.
  • Certain auxins are natural (Eg : Indole acetic acid (IAA), Indole butyric acid (IBA) that are isolated from plants) and some are synthetic (Eg : NAA (Naphthalene acetic acid) and 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic)).
  • Auxins are mostly synthesized on the apical meristems.

Functions :

  • It promotes cell division.
  • It initiates root formation.
  • It helps in apical dominance.
  • It initiates flowering in pineapples.
  • It promotes abscission of mature leaves and fruits.
  • It induces parthenocarpy in tomatoes.
  • It prevents premature leaf and fruit drop.
  • It helps in xylem differentiation.

Applications :

  • It is used in tissue culture.
  • It is used to obtain plants from stem cuttings.
  • 2,4D is used as weedicides. It kills the Dicot weeds but does not affect monocots.
  • Cutting of the shoot tips would help in growth of lateral buds. It is used in hedge making. Eg : Tea plantations.
  • It helps in obtaining seedles fruits.
  • It helps in more flowering and fruiting in pineapples.
  • It helps in preventing premature fruit and leaf fall.
