Ganga Action Plan was, launched by Shri Rajeev Gandhi (Prime Minister of India at that time) on 14 January, 1986 with the main motive of reduction of pollution in Ganga River. It also plans to improve the condition of Ganga.

Steps are-
1)Diversion and treatment of domestic sewage and present toxic and industrial chemical wastes from identified grossly polluting units entering in to the river.
2)New technology of sewage treatment like Up-flow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB)  has been implemented.

Government has partially succeeded in its mission.

The ganga action plan was launched in 1985 to reduce the pollution level in the river by Rajiv Gandhi. However, the river is beyond repair due to increase population and growing industrialisation. Now, the government of India has launched a new initiative known as National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) in 2016 by Narendra Modi.
