The heating up of the Earth's atmosphere due to the trapping of heat of sun by greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, methane, etc in the atmosphere is called greenhouse effect. Due to the increase in greenhouse effect, the average temperature of the atmosphere of the Earth is rising which is often known as global warming. Global warming on the other hand, adversely affects the monsoon rains and also brings about changes in the seasonal pattern.

!! GREEN HOUSE EFFECT !!

Answer:

  • The Solar radiations coming from sun pass through the earth's atmosphere and reach the earth's surface. Most of this energy is absorbed by the earth's surface.
  • Some radiations are reflected back by the earth's surface to space .
  • Reflected radiations are reflected back by the earth's surface to space.
  • Reflected radiations have longer wavelengths. These radiations are trapped by green house gases (CO2, H2O vapours, CH4, Nitrous oxide) thereby warming the planet. This is called Green House Effect.
  • Higher level of CO2 and methane are accumulating in the atmosphere enhancing the greem house effect and producing global warming. Due to Global warming the temp. of earth is rising because of which polar ice caps has started melting. This has raised the water lavel in oceans . The Circulations of scientists show that if the level of greenhouse gases remain rising at the present level, in a span of 30-40 years the level of water in oceans will rise to a level which will submerge a big part of plains.
  • The worst part is that we have no means to control such global phenomenon, Once the gas enter the atmosphere. Therefore, use of fossil fuels should be reduced to a minimum level.
