In the past there used to be direct participation of the people in the management of decision making and public affairs. This was possible as the units of administration and the population were small. This type of democracy is called direct democracy. This is not possible today because of the large size and population. This is only followed in some provinces of Switzerland. In the past only the adult male population were allowed to vote, and also participate in decision making, whereas today in democracy all the citizens have the right to vote irrespective of their caste, religion etc.
