The heart in man is about the size of a closed fist.It lies inside the chest cavity on the left side between the lungs, enclosed in a double walled sac, called pericardium. In between two layers of pericardium, a narrow space called pericardial cavity is present. It is filled with a pericardial fluid.

Heart act as a pumping centre. The heart regularly and rhythmically contra and relaxes at short interval throughout life. This activity of the heart is called beating. Each heart beat has two phase systole and diastole. In a normal young man heart beats 70-75 times per minute.
