Tides :

If you have ever been to the coast, you will know that twice every day the sea rises so that it comes higher up the shore, and twice a day it goes back. These are high and low tides.

The Sun & the moon act rather like magnets on the Earth. We call this force 'gravity'. Both the Sun & Moon try to pull the Earth towards them, but the Earth is whizzing around so fast that they cannot move it. The seas & oceans, however, are loose on the surface & can be pulled by gravity into heaps'. Sometimes the Sun & the Moon are pulling in the same direction, so that the body of water is higher, at other times they are pulling against one another so that tides are slower.

Tides are important in some places because large ships can enter the harbor only when the water is deeper. In mid-ocean the tides are about one to three meters high, but when they come to the coast, where the water is shallower, there can be a difference of 12 to 15 meters between high & low tide.
