Explain the higher stability of pbcl2 as compared to pbcl4

this is due to inert pair effect of two valence s electron in pb .due to very low shielding power of d and f orbital ,the two valence s electron werw tightly held by the nucleus and because of this the two valence s electron cant take part in bonding in pb ,thus pb is able to loose two valence s electron and hence its oxidation state becomes +2 instead of +4 .Thats why pb+2 is able to take only two cl atom instead of 4 cl atom .Thus pb form pbcl2 &it is more stable than pbcl4
