- The width differs from 500km in the western region to 200kmin central and eastern region.
- The northern most region is known as Greater Himalayas or Himadri.
- The portion of range found south of the Greater Himalayas is called as Lesser Himalayas or Himachal.
- The southern most range of Himalayas are Shivaliks.
- The highest mountain in Himalayas is Mount Everest of 8848 metres.
- These protect The Great Plains of India from cold winds of Central Asia during severe winter.
