This is a very good question. Generally people see the poor as patients of disease called poverty! They rarely bother to understand the basic reasons behind so much poverty.
A major reason behind so much historic widespread poverty is the centuries of colonial plunder. The British rule not only transferred wealth from India to make Britain rich, it also systematically destroyed the very foundation of Indian crop pattern to suit British economy. They also discouraged indigenous industry through biased laws and turned India into a supplier of basic raw material and exporter of finished British goods. India accounted for over 25% global GDP in 17th century - it means Britain was just an underdeveloped and poor nation, the prime reason why it had to colonize to plunder other societies. India was its richest subject colony - plenty of wealth and people to be slaved.
