Novels started in India in the mid-19th century. The first novels were written in Bengali and Marathi. Such novels were simple and were concerned with promoting nationalism and providing a moral to the people. Novels spread to other parts of India like Kerala and the Madras Presidency. Novels began to be written in Telegu and Marathi. Hindi novels also started being written. The greatest Hindi novelist was Premchand who wrote in the early nineteenth century.
