Digestion is a catabolic process,in which complex and large components of food are broken down into their respective simpler and smaller forms with the help of various hydrolytic enzymes. These simpler forms are furthur taken up by different parts of body and are finally absorbed.

The entire system, which performs this process of digestion is know as digestive system. In human beings, the digestive system contitutes a long tabular structure called alimentary canal (about 7-8 metres long) and digestive glands associated with it,which secrete various digestive enzymes.
