Answer:

Hydraulic structure at the time of Chandragupta Maurya is evident in our history, as various artificial sources of water was built under his reign, to tap the naturally available water of rivers and springs.

  • The Mauryan dynasty, have created the earliest known artificial lakes of India, Sudarshan Lake, in the Gujarat’s Girnar area.
  • Kautilya’s ‘Arthshastra’, also mentions about the huge network of irrigation canals, to facilitate agricultural needs was built in the states of Odisha.
  • Many dams and water reservoirs were built in India during this time.
  • The water supply systems were managed under supervised structure. Cultivators were required to pay their taxes as per the irrigation method and water usage they are having.
  • The network of Pynes, the river channels carrying water was created. Embankments were created in low lying fields to act as water reservoirs, to fight the water woos of the Mauryan empire.

Thus, it could be said that knowing the importance of water, the Mauryan dynasty took utmost care and steps to use it efficiently.
