As the axial tilt increases, the seasonal contrast increases so that winters are colder and summers are warmer in both hemispheres.
The angle of the sun hitting the ground changes through the year the amount of heat per square metre is reduced when the tilt of the earth in the northern hemisphere is away from the sun, in other words the sun is lower in the sky, temperatures drop to below average giving us winter. Six months later the tilt of the earth means the sun gets higher in the sky and temperatures rise above average giving us summer.
