Surat, Masulipatnam and Hoogly were significant ports of India
Explanation:
- Surat was governed by Muslims in the 12th and 15th centuries. In 1514, Duarte Barbosa, the Portugal traveler, described Surat as a significant seaport, visited by many Malabar ships and various parts of the world. It was the Mughal empire 's wealthiest port. The Surat Port was also regarded by European traders as significant. The British & the Portuguese battled each other in order to obtain full control of the trading route. The French & the Dutch had also entered Surat for trading purposes. Suarat port also connected India to Red Sea ports and the Gulf
- Masulipatnam simply means fish harbor city. In the 17th century, it was a center of vigorous activity. The Dutch & the English East India Companies tried to regulate it as it soon became the most powerful port of Andhra Pradesh. The Dutch had built the fort of Masulipatnam. This port had vast trade links with the South Asian ports
- The Hooghly port was used, by the British to ship lakhs of Indians as indentured labourers" to far-flung territories all through the Empire. This port too had vast trade links with the South Asian ports
