There are many literary sources which give us a detailed account of the Sultanate Period. They are primarily in Persian and Arabic. They can be divided into two categories - chronicles and travellers accounts. Some of them are:

A. Chronicles -

1. Tarikh ul Hind by Al Beruni

2. The Khaza in ul Fatuh by Amir Khusrao. He tells about the achievements of his patron, Ala-ud-din Khalji.

3. Tarikh i Firvzshahil by Zia ud Barani. He worked in the revenue department and has described revenue matters in detail.

B. Travellers Accounts -

1. Marco Polo and his Travels tells about various aspects of people's life and other events of southern India in the 13th century.

2. Abdur Razzaq has left a detailed account of the administrative, cultural, economic and political conditions in the Vijayanagar empire.

3. Nicolo Conti was an Italian traveller who came to India in 1520. He wrote about the customs and manners of the people and the conditions of the period.

Besides this there are some Indian Publications of the Medieval Period

1. Prithviraj Raso by Chand Bardai tells about events related to Prithviraj Chauhan.

2. Surjana Charita Kavya was written by Chandrasekhar. It gives information about the Chauhan rulers.

There are archaeological sources like coins and monuments of the period which give us a comprehensive idea of the history of this period. The sultans were great lovers of architecture. Some of them are the Red Palace, Jamait Khan Masjid, city of Tughluqabad, Quwat ul Islam and Qutb Minar.
