Bacteria like Nitrococcus converts the ammonia to nitrites by the process of nitrification. Nitrite to nitrite conversion takes place by Nitrocystis.

Rhizobia are soil bacteria that fix nitrogen (diazotrophs) after becoming established inside root nodules of legumes (Fabaceae).
